FAQ

Common questions

What should I bring for my tax return?
  • Last year's tax return (if you're a new client)
  • W-2s, 1099s (interest, dividends, brokerage, retirement, contract work) and any K-1s
  • Form 1098 mortgage interest and property tax statements
  • Health insurance forms (1095-A if you bought coverage through an exchange)
  • Records of charitable gifts, childcare costs, education expenses (1098-T) and estimated tax payments
  • For a business or rental: income and expense totals, or your QuickBooks file
  • Photo ID and bank routing/account numbers for direct deposit
Not sure if something matters? Bring it — Craig will sort it out.
What are the key tax deadlines?
  • Individual returns (1040): April 15
  • Partnerships (1065) and S corporations (1120-S): March 15 for calendar-year businesses
  • C corporations (1120) and trusts/estates (1041): April 15 for calendar-year filers
  • Nonprofits (990): the 15th day of the 5th month after year-end (May 15 for calendar-year organizations)
  • Quarterly estimated taxes: generally April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15
When a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day.
Can I file an extension?
Yes. An extension gives you more time to file — generally six months for individuals (to October 15) — but not more time to pay. Any tax you expect to owe is still due by the original deadline, or interest and penalties may apply. If you're running late, reach out early and Craig can estimate what you owe and file the extension for you.
I got a letter from the IRS. What should I do?
Don't panic, and don't ignore it. Many IRS notices are simple adjustments or requests for information. Note the response deadline on the letter, try our IRS letter decoder, then send Craig a copy. He'll explain what it means, whether you agree with it, and the best way to respond. With your authorization, he can also contact the IRS on your behalf.
Do you work with clients outside the Spokane area?
Absolutely. Documents, signatures and meetings can all be handled online, so you can work with Craig from anywhere.
How much does it cost?
Fees depend on the complexity of your return or project. After a short consultation, you'll get a quote before any work begins.
